Grand Solmar Rancho San Lucas knows that a trip north of San Jose del Cabo to the East Cape can be a fun day trip for one of many reasons. People often head up the East Cape to enjoy many different adventure sports such as snorkeling, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and four-wheeling, but the biggest draw to the area has always been fishing. And one of the most significant events that bring the most people to the sleepy seaside village of Los Barrilles every year is the annual East Cape Dorado Shoot Out.

This year is the Fifteenth Annual tournament and it is scheduled to take place on July 20th in Los Barriles. One of the largest fishing tournament in Baja California Sur, the Dorado Shoot Out averages about 130 teams each year. Compared to many other fishing tournaments in Los Cabos, this fishing competition has a rather low entry fee of just $500 per team. A brand new, 2019 4×4 Volkswagen Amarok pickup truck is part of the top prize packages this year, and additional side jackpots of $200, $300, $500 and $1,000 are also available. The total value of cash and prizes handed out last year were well more than $100,000.

The waters off of Los Barrilles warm up significantly in the summertime which brings many species of fish closer to the coastline to feed. Reef fishing is also very popular in the area in the summertime but to be a part of the East Cape Dorado Shoot Out, you will need a boat. Each team is made up of four anglers each and are allowed a separate captain and deckhand. Although tunas, billfish and much other fish are caught during the tournament, to be eligible to win prizes, the only catch that matters is Dorado.
